About Old Saybrook
Old Saybrook is situated in Middlesex County, Connecticut. This is the place where the Connecticut River meets Long Island Sound. Old Saybrook is one of the oldest cities in the USA. It had been founded on July 8, 1854. The history of this city begins with the Saybrook Colony that was settled in late 1635 near the Connecticut River. On October 9, 1701 the Collegiate School of Connecticut, later renamed Yale University was established here.
Old Saybrook offers many attractions for all the tourists such as: casinos, theaters, Mystic Seaport & Aquarium, marinas, shores and landscapes, Lynde Point and Saybrook Point lighthouses. This collection is completed with a large variety of shops and restaurants. Being surrounded by the Long Island Sound and Connecticut River, Old Saybrook becomes the perfect seaside destination.
Old Saybrook has also two public beaches, a few parks and a mini-golf courses (Old Saybrook Fenwick Golf Club and Saybrook Point Mini Golf) at Saybrook Point. The state highway Route 154 is the thoroughfare in the city and is very used for walking and bicycling. The town hosts Fort Saybrook, Connecticut's first military fortification, built in 1636 by the British, now an impressive 18-acre historical park.
Old Saybrook is a city that must be visited for a weekend or at least an overnight stay, not because of the travel time, but for the reason that it must be enjoyed piece by piece.
The tourists can discover Old Saybrook by trolley. For more local tradition visit the General William Hart House that serves as home to the Old Saybrook Historical Society. For the antiques lovers, the city displays over 400 antique stores such as Antiques Depot or Essex-Saybrook Antiques Village on Middlesex Turnpike/Route 154.
Old Saybrook is proud to have accommodated a few notable residents such as: Vin Baker - a professional basketball player in the NBA, Katharine Houghton Hepburn - a four-time Academy Award-winning American star of film, television and stage, who lived in the Fenwick section of town, Ann Petry - an African American novelist, journalist and biographer and Elmer Eric Schattschneider -- a political scientist and former president of the American Political Science Association from 1956 to 1957.
